Urban Education Program

The foundation is committed to improving the quality of education available to low-income and disadvantaged populations in New York City schools.

The Problem

  • 1 in 3 students in New York City drop out of school, and will never graduate from high school, nor complete their G.E.D.
  • By 8th grade, 1 in 2 students in New York City are behind grade level in Math and Reading/Writing.
  • By age 8, an African American or Latino child is 25% less likely to be at grade level in Math and Reading/Writing than a Caucasian child.
  • New York City spends 300% more per child than cities with higher rates of academic success.

The Solution

Education reform is our primary interest.  Our strategy is to rely on evidence, best practices, and the experience of knowledgeable, field tested experts.  In the short-term, we recognize individual examples of unusual success must be designed, implemented, and rigorously evaluated.  With air-tight results, a replicable model can be developed, and credible advocacy for systems level implementation becomes possible.  In the long-term, our goal is to influence schools, policymakers and government departments to adopt approaches to urban education that are both effective and cost-efficient.

Our vision is nothing short of an urban education environment in which every student is prepared to enter higher education with competency, character, and inspiration.
